In case you missed the discussion on Twitter earlier this evening, below are the questions/points from today’s discussion: –

Thank you all for joining yet another weekly chat session of #263Chat

Today I wanted us to discuss these 2 vital issues – dual citizenship & voting rights of the Zimbabweans in the diaspora. #263Chat #Twimbos

The dual citizenship wasn’t included in the draft constitution at COPAC level – Link here  #263Chat

It seems to be such a contentious issue that it was effectively ‘omitted’ from the draft constitution altogether. #263Chat

Never mind the political decision behind this omission BUT wouldn’t it help Zim eg economically to allow dual citizenship/similar? #263Chat

India introduced Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) & Person of Indian Origin (POI) programs for example – Link here #263Chat

OCI card is similar to a US “green card” in that a holder can travel to & from India indefinitely, work in India, study in India, and own property in India #263Chat

PIO card is a form of identification issued to a Person of Indian Origin who holds a passport in another country Eg benefits no visa required to visit India #263Chat

Could we not adopt something similar to tap into the Zimbabwean in the diaspora who wants to maintain that link with ‘home’? #263Chat

Couldn’t we attract other citizens who discover that they’d like to call Zim ‘home’- Other citizens with skills, investment etc that we desperately require? #263Chat

I have often heard people say things like ‘just because I live in the UK, doesn’t mean I don’t have an interest in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is STILL home’ #263Chat

‘If Zimbabwe is home, and I happen to live in the UK because of economic reasons, then surely I should still be able to vote in Zim elections? Other nations can vote, why not Zim’? #263Chat

Apart from the current legislation on overseas votes & dual citizenship, I don’t really have a concrete answer for that question. Your thoughts please #263Chat

This week’s #263Chat session requires an entirely separate blog for the ‘take home points’. This will follow within the next few days.

Please feel free to share this #263Chat session with others and continue to have the conversation after the #263Chat sessions. Comments and feedback are always most welcome. Please remember the idea is to invoke something within, keep the conversation on-going but most importantly find solutions to our problems & challenges. Together we can…

Till next
